Bishopstone

Bishopstone, seen from 313 211 with the ex-16.27 Southern service from Seaford to Brighton on Saturday, 15th April 2023. The original station was slightly to the west and opened with the line on 1st June 1864 but closed when this station opened on 26th September 1938. (However, the original station reopened on 6th April 1939 as Bishopstone Beach Halt but closed again on 1st January 1942.) Bishopstone, now reduced to a single platform but still accessed through the Art Deco building seen here, was designed by Scotsman James Robb Scott (1882-1965) who became the Chief Architect to the Southern Railway and who based his design for this station on Dr. Charles Holden's 1932 Arnos Grove station, LU Piccadilly Line.
