Wilderspool

The Mersey bridge at Warrington Arpley has a footway alongside, allowing this view. The 'Lymm' line to Stockport finally closed in 1985 but the run round loop at Latchford remained so trains from the Ditton line could access Arpley Yard or the WCML and vice versa. This signal was once worked by a tall box between it and the bridge, but is now operated from Arpley Junction. Previously it protected a level crossing but that was replaced by the bridge in the 1950s. Wilderspool was a temporary terminus from 1853 to 1854 when the bridge over the Mersey was completed and Warrington Arpley opened, although it did see further use as a ticket platform.
