Had the original Rochdale Canal construction plans come to fruition there would have been a tunnel at Summit and Sands Lock (No.32) near Walsden, and thirteen others, would not have been built. Situated in typical Calderdale scenery it is just four locks short of the Summit pound, which is quite short at 0.8 miles. The fourteen locks saved 20,000 pounds compared to building the tunnel, 7% of the original estimated construction costs for the whole canal.
