Wearmouth Colliery

Looking west over the headshunt for Wearmouth Colliery sidings, closed in 1993 and formerly on a through route to Southwick Junction. On the skyline are the remaining approach arches of the Queen Alexandra Bridge, built double - decked for road and rail as a joint venture between Sunderland Corporation and the North Eastern Railway. The railway closed in 1921 having been little used.
