Arnside

Middlebarrow Quarry, between Arnside and Silverdale, was operational until around 2000 and would have continued but planning permission for further extraction was refused in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It was rail served for a long time but the sidings closed before the quarry itself. Passengers on this Preston to Carlisle local service will get a glimpse of the huge quarry as it passes over the now chained-up level crossing on 26th April 2022. The two sidings were on the land in the foreground and there was also a loading plant, now demolished.
