Bala Junction

Bala station, Bala Lake Railway, in July 1980. This narrow gauge line runs on a section of the old standard gauge Ruabon to Barmouth line as far as Llanuwchyllyn, but was closed by BR in 1965. This eastern terminus is more or less on the site of the old Bala Junction station, where the branch to Blaenau Ffestiniog via Bala once diverged. This was closed between Bala and Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1960 but the stub from Bala to Bala Junction closed concurrently with the Ruabon/Barmouth line in 1965. It is little changed today (See image 68648) but work is now under way to extend the railway back into the town of Bala where a new station will be constructed. Further east between Corwen and Llangollen, the old Barmouth line is now part of the standard gauge heritage Llangollen Railway.
