Chester

Northern's 142042 waits in Platform 6 at Chester on 21 March 2012. The train later returned to Manchester Piccadilly over the CLC route via Knutsford and Stockport. The platform canopy used to continue to the main station building behind the camera. Almost 40 years before the photo was taken an out of control train of 38 tank wagons loaded with petroleum products, and hauled by D5028, collided with an empty DMU in the nearest bay platform (then numbered 11). Following the accident, and serous fire that resulted, part of the canopy which had been significantly damaged was removed. The official report into the accident can be found on the The Railways Archive website www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/DoE_Chester1972.pdf
