Biasca

In the mid nineteen sixties, the classic Swiss Ae 6/6 locomotives reigned supreme on the Gotthard route. Here 11410 'Basel Stadt' is seen at Biasca along with Ae 4/6 10804 – outrageous power for a short southbound local service and presumably a path-saving exercise for a light engine movement. The first twenty five Ae 6/6s in the class became famous throughout Switzerland and beyond as 'Canton Locomotives', through being named after each of the Swiss Cantons and given rather glamorous raised chrome stripes along the sides and cab ends of the engines. The remaining 95 Ae 6/6s were named after Swiss cities and towns but missed out on the chrome decoration. Number 10804 was from an earlier generation of Swiss electric, introduced during WW II and often referred to as 'half locos', as they were effectively 'half' of one of the experimental 'double-loco' prototypes built in the early nineteen thirties.
