Elgin East

Grain – this is Elgin East in 1988 – the loco is 47638 ‘County of Kent’ with grain bogies. The wagons replaced the earlier BR standard type in the mid-80s but the traffic was lost by the early 1990s to road haulage. The trucks are doubtless bound for the maltings at Burghead. There was a famous daily grain train up the East Coast mainline from Doncaster for many years. Grain was loaded at many sites – Kirkcaldy harbour, the stub of the line to Forfar at Arbroath at St Vigeans, Montrose and probably others. I think it got added to a Speedlink service but when this service ended it became block trains as demanded and is now another example of Lost Railfreight.
