Walton Summit

Walton Summit, near Bamber Bridge, was the northern terminus of the southern section of the Lancaster Canal. From 1807 to 1854 a double track plateway tramroad provided a link with the main stretch of the canal at Preston Basin. A rope worked incline at Walton Summit was one of three originally on the five mile link and this view from the summit [SD583248], in December 2020, looks down a steep public footpath that follows the old incline before the tramroad route disappears under modern housing and a business park.
