Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath, looking east on 29th August 2020. This original Hampstead Junction Railway station opened with the line on 2nd January 1860. In 1953 it was rebuilt by the London Midland Region in rather doleful reinforced concrete and in 1963, when part of the Broad Street to Richmond line, was listed for closure in the Beeching Report. Protests came thick and fast and it was reprieved in 1966. Thirty years later, the line was converted from third rail to OLE and the 1953 buildings were replaced by these waiting areas with traditional style canopies, the only station on the line to have been so treated. Then in November 2007, after the depressing Silverlink era, the entire line was handed over to Transport for London and rechristened London Overground.
