Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea once had a goods branch that curved away east then north from the station (closed 1964) to serve coasters and barges visiting the harbour. It linked up with a quayside tramway extension where wagons were moved by horses and latterly railway lorries. This view, taken on 15th January 1978, 26 years after the branch and tramway were closed, shows the route of the former tramway, which ran from behind the camera and terminated at the large building (once a maltings) on the right. Some may question why several vessels and the 300 ton coaster “Function” are high and dry on the quay instead of in the water. A freak North Sea storm surge had inundated the waterfront three days earlier and dumped them there, prompting the town to substantially strengthen its flood protection afterwards. In 1953, a similar event had even flooded the passenger station on the other side of the town.
