Takeley

The former Takeley station in Essex, on the Bishop's Stortford to Braintree line that closed to passengers in 1952 and to freight in 1971, seen here during the long hot summer of 1976, looking towards Braintree. The trackbed is now the Flitch Way footpath and cycleway and Takeley station restored as a cafe. In the 1970s, there was a proposal to rebuild some of this line, which would have passed through Takeley and then with a brand new alignment from it to serve Stansted Airport, then under construction. But this was dropped in favour of a completely brand new branch to the airport from the Cambridge main line at Stansted Mountfitchet.
