NRM Shildon

Built at Horwich Works in 1926 as LMS 13000, this Hughes 'Crab' 2-6-0 was renumbered as 2700 in 1934. It received its final (BR) number 42700 in September 1948 and completed just short of 40 years operational service at Birkenhead's Mollington Street shed (25461), from where it was finally withdrawn in March 1966. Following a spell on loan to several preservation groups (see 32719) the locomotive became a static exhibit within the National Collection. Photographed on display in the main exhibition hall at Shildon in November 2007.
