Newtongrange [Village]

Photograph taken alongside the junction of Main Street, Newtongrange and the A7 looking south in October 2019. The wheel provides an obvious reminder of the industry on which the village was built. Less obvious perhaps is the protrusion in the wall marking the location of the western abutment of the bridge that once brought coal from Lingerwood and Easthouses into the central handling and disposal facilities at Lady Victoria. Just to keep the Midlothian coal mining theme going, the Lothian 48 bus began its journey at Gorebridge (say no more) and shows Fort Kinnaird as its destination. The latter is a popular retail park built on the site of Newcraighall (Klondyke) Colliery see image 1071.
