Sfax

A metre-gauge DMU enters the passenger station of Tunisia's second city. The passenger terminal can just be seen above the right hand side of the train. The service ran from Tunis and on to southern terminus at Gabès.
To the left is the extensive goods yard with wagons probably containing agricultural produce e.g. olives and olive oil and possibly dates from the oases along the borders of the Chott el Djerid salt lake together with Esparto Grass for papermaking from the Sahara Desert itself. Processed phosphate was also exported by ship from the harbour here having been railed from the mines at Gafsa.
