Blackhorse Road

Brand new Aventra 710262 with a London Overground GOBLIN service from Gospel Oak to Barking calling at Blackhorse Road station. This view looks back west, in pouring rain on the afternoon of Monday, 12th August 2019. The original station here opened with the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway on 9th July 1894 and was sited on the east side of the Walthamstow thoroughfare from which it took its name. On 1st September 1968, LUL's sparkling new Victoria Line, the first deep-level tube across London for more than 60 years, opened and had a separate station on the opposite side of the road to the BR station. Passengers had to trot between the two in all weathers, crossing the busy road on the level. The situation was rectified on 14th December 1981 when the Barking line station, which had fallen into an advanced state of decrepitude, was re-sited on the west side of Blackhorse Road with a direct interchange to the Victoria Line and this is the 1981 station seen in this view.
