Penrith

390127 slows to call at Penrith as it crosses the M6 Motorway with a Euston to Glasgow service on 20th October 2019. The bridge appears to be formed of two huge trough structures, with that on the left carrying the two main lines. On the right the line in the foreground used to be used by Keswick trains, which climbed away immediately beyond the bridge, but is also the Down Loop. The loop is over a mile long, running from Eamont Bridge to Penrith station, and has an intermediate signal so it can accommodate two trains. See image 27643 taken at this location in 1967.
