NRM Shildon

Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 34051 'Winston Churchill' on display at Locomotion, Shildon, on 11th May 2019. Originally 21C151 and designed by Bulleid for the Southern Railway, it was built at Brighton and entered service on 30th December 1946. At a ceremony at Waterloo station on 11th September 1947, it was named after the wartime leader but as he was then in opposition, he refused to attend and name it personally. It passed into BR ownership in 1948 and was renumbered 34051. On 31st January 1965 it hauled Sir Winston's State Funeral train, witnessed on t.v. by 350 million people around the world (and I was one even though only 13 at the time). The train ran from Waterloo via Ascot and Reading and then through Oxford to Handborough, this being the nearest station to the church at Bladon where Churchill was interred. The locomotive was withdrawn on 19th September 1965, having covered 807,496 miles in service.
