Mellon Charles

Mellon Charles near Aultbea in 1991. Loch Ewe was a mustering place for the Arctic Convoys. Most of the buildings seen have now gone. The development of the base led to the building of the road from Achnasheen station. During the war Willys Jeeps were used here, remaining in use until the 1970s. The remains of one was still behind the local garage in the 1990s marked 'Caution left hand drive, no signal'.
