Vienenburg

A pair of ERIXX Desiros coupling at Vienenburg. We had just arrived on the right-hand one from Bad Harzburg and the left-hand set had just arrived from Goslar. Both sets had left their starting points at 13:45 and once coupled, they formed the 14:08 train to Brandenburg. Both trains are Siemens Desiro 2-section articulated Class 642 DMUs and this composite shot shows the Scharfenberg coupler (German: Scharfenbergkupplung or Schaku) in action. Designed in 1903 by Karl Scharfenberg, this coupling is now widely used for general passenger and mass transit systems.
