Fort William Junction

On a rather dull December day, a recently introduced SuperSprinter Class 156 crosses Fort William Junction, renamed from Mallaig Junction 2 years earlier, and heads north back to Glasgow Queen St. In the background is the junction yard with some long freight trains. Just to the left of the DMU in the Cess is a yellow post with a sign displaying the number 0. This shows a mileage change point where the Engineer's Line Reference for the Mallaig Extension begins: WHL becomes MLG1. It continues for 1 mile and 27 chains to Banavie Junction where the line originally continued to Banavie Pier before the Mallaig Extension was built. Mileage returns to zero again as MLG1 becomes MLG2. Compare this view with one from 20 years later see image 29132.
