Blackhill Incline

A model of the inclined plane which transported empty barges up 96ft was located next to, and bypassed, the Blackhill locks. Use of the incline saved a huge amount of water. Not as famous as some of its English counterparts the site is now alongside the south side of the M8 at Riddrie. The model, presented by the engineer James Leslie himself, is in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. This remarkable incline (in operation 1850-1887) deserves to be better known.
