Shanghai Railway Museum

Shanghai Railway Museum. The museum, which opened in 2004, is largely contained in a replica of the main building of Shanghai North Station which was adjacent. Shanghai North Station was opened as Shanghai Station in 1909 and renamed in 1916. It was Shanghai's principal station for most of the 20th century until closure in 1987. It was replaced at that time by Shanghai Railway Station which is nearby and is still very much in use by both conventional and high speed trains. The site of the former Shanghai North Station terminal building is now the location of the extensive offices of the Shanghai Railway Administration. The former station tracks at Shanghai North now serve as the carriage sidings for Shanghai Railway Station. In addition Shanghai is served by the vast Hongqiao Station to the west of the city which is the principal high speed train station and also by the South Station from which conventional trains run to destinations in the south of China as well as high speed trains on the Jinshan Railway. 3 June 2017
