Walton

GBRf 66749 heads south, passing under the goods line section of Shay Lane bridge on the former four track Midland Main Line at Walton, near Wakefield. The trainload of silica sand is en route from Middleton Towers, Norfolk, to Monk Bretton glassworks near Barnsley. The view is taken from a footbridge I have not stood on for 50 years, from when I was a member of the Wakefield Railfans Club that rented the ticket office and waiting room, and had free rein of both platforms, at the former Sandal & Walton station. This was from the early 60s to mid 70s when still a fully operational line for many years with both express passenger and fast goods working through the platforms. [Ref query 12838]
