Armathwaite

The 'Midland Type 2B' signal box alongside Armathwaite station, photographed in May 2006. Originally manufactured in kit form at the Midland Railway's signalling workshops in Derby, the box was assembled on this site in 1899 as a replacement for an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire. Closed in January 1983 it is still owned by Network Rail, but in 1992 was leased to the 'Friends of the Settle & Carlisle Line', who have since restored it to original MR appearance.
