Niddrie Junction [1st]

A 1997 view east along a very old trackbed. This is the Niddrie to Fisherrow alignment which was severed by the North British's 1847 Portobello to Niddrie South Junction line.

Off to the left is the 1884 line from Niddrie West Junction which opened in connection with the Edinburgh, Suburban and Southside Junction Railway. This connected to the ECML at Niddrie East Junction and used a portion of the old Fisherrow branch, the junction with the ECML was moved further south with the opening of the Lothian Lines. This alignment closed in 1983.

Further to the left, and built to coincide with the severing, the Fisherrow Branch was connected to the Portobello to Niddrie line by a 1847 north to east curve which met the Portobello line at Niddrie junction [2nd] where there was an interchange station ('Niddry Junction'). Thus a NB train heading for Fisherrow would turn south at Portobello, east at Niddrie Junction [2nd], pass over the NBR mainline before reaching Fisherrow. The line probably fell into abeyance when the new 1859 curve from Newhailes Junction to the Fisherrow/Musselburgh Branch opened. A portion - as above - was to re-open in 1884.

This site and the three lines here have since been redeveloped.
