Smardale

The large Limestone Kilns adjacent to the NER (SDLUR) trackbed at Smardale Gill, two miles east of Ravenstonedale and 840 ft a.o.d. Looking west in June 2015. The Kilns were out of use by 1900, the railway finally closing in 1962. Strangely, 52 years after the track-lifting, the sleeper 'pattern' of the permanent-way can still be clearly seen.
