Benneckenstein

Metre gauge 2-10-2T 99 7245 eases its train, the 14:36 departure from the Brocken to Nordhausen, into Benneckenstein on 19 July 2008. Photographed from the roof of the goods shed (only accessible for a brief period from scaffolding while David Spaven and myself were painting the outside of the adjacent station building), the engine shed features prominently on the right hand side. This brick built structure dating from the 1980s, had replaced an earlier half-timbered construction which went up in flames one night in June 1982 in an incident involving the then oil-fired 99 7232 and a well oiled fireman! At that time the shed was still in use for stabling one loco overnight but by the date of the photograph in 2008 it was only utilised for storing surplus locos.
