Swalwell

Scene at the former NCB Opencast Executive Swalwell Disposal Point in March 1971, with ex-WD 75167 (Bagnall 2755/1944) shunting wagons. The terraces of Swalwell and Whickham form the backdrop to the south, with the River Tyne behind the camera. Today, the collieries, yards, coke ovens and coal staiths that once dominated the area have given way to new housing, roads and retail outlets - not to mention the Metro Centre!
