Marsden [2nd] (Whitburn Colliery)

A Mark 1 carriage outside The Rattler Bar and Restaurant alongside the coast road at Marsden, South Shields, in July 2014. Named after The Marsden Rattler - the line opened by the Whitburn Coal Company from South Shields (Westoe Lane) to Whitburn Colliery in 1879 - which roughly followed the route of the current road. The line closed to passengers in 1953, but continued to transport coal until the pit closed in 1968.
