Irk Valley Junction

Metrolink driver's view of Irk Valley Junction, on a viaduct between Manchester Victoria and Woodlands Rd on the Bury line. The chord to the right closed in 1966 but was reinstated in 2012 for the Oldham and Rochdale Metrolink services. This junction was the scene of a major accident in 1953 when an EMU from Bury ran through a red signal and collided with a steam-hauled train on the crossover. The EMU fell from the viaduct and the driver and eight passengers were killed.
