Monument Lane

Monument Lane shed, Birmingham, looking west from the entrance to the shed yard, in November 1960. The line to Wolverhampton runs past off to the right, while to the left and behind the camera stands the large City Sawmill. Ex-LMS 40936, officially withdrawn from here in January 1961, is one of a pair of Compounds in the picture. The locomotive was cut up in September that year at nearby Cashmores, Great Bridge. The shed (closed 1962) and sawmill are long gone, with most of the area now occupied by the National Indoor Arena and car park.
