Pen Rhiw-calch

The Bryn Oer Tramway (also known as the Brinore Tramroad) was built to transport coal and limestone from Trefil (near Ebbw Vale) to the canal at Talybont east of Brecon. There was a long incline above - and steeper than - the Brecon & Merthyr's 'seven mile bank'. The photograph was taken at Pen Rhiw-calch, where the tramroad went through the hill below in a short tunnel. Visible at the top right of this picture just below the square-ish woodland is the route of the B&M heading to Torpantau.
