Stourbridge Town

Drivers console in Parry People Mover 139001 waiting to leave Stourbridge Town for Stourbridge Junction. PPMs are powered by a flywheel and the left hand dial is the flywheel rev counter. This is spooled up by an input from the engine or by regenerative braking and the revs could be seen climbing as the unit dropped down to the branch terminus. The flywheel, seen here turning at 2000RPM prior to departure, then powers the vehicle back up the hill to the junction. The Class 139 unit makes six return trips an hour on the branch and must be very economical in fuel use compared to its Class 153 predecessor, which operated a fifteen minute interval service.
