Pickering Railway Gas Works

The former railway gas works retort and purifier house just south of Pickering station. Built by the York & North Midland Railway in the 1840s, it supplied gas to the station and part of Pickering itself before construction of the town's own gas works. After decommissioning the building was used for a time as a grain warehouse. The still impressive structure is seen here in March 2010 in use as a hairdressing salon. [Editorial ref: 'Oh Mrs Ware, I do like your hair, who does it? I go to Madame Pom-Pom round by the gas works... ' (Cribbins 1962)]
