Grantown-on-Spey East

The late-running 10.10 Speyside trip freight from Aviemore heads out of Grantown-on-Spey East into the block section to Ballindalloch on Thursday 11th April 1968. While most distilleries were deliberately located adjacent or close to the railway, by the 1960s it was becoming increasingly hard for rail to compete with the flexibility of the modern lorry and the expansion of the trunk road network. Rail was volume-hungry, but most distilleries generated only a handful of full loads daily. Seven months later, this train was history.
