Carnforth

Black 5 no 44781 stands on Carnforth shed in 1968. In common with many surviving locomotives towards the end of steam, number plate, shed plate and any other removable mementoes have long 'disappeared', in this case replaced by white paint. While the shed code 9K shown here refers to Bolton shed, the locomotive spent its last days at 10A Carnforth. 44781, along with classmate 44871, was one of the last BR operational steam locomotives and said its goodbyes on the Fifteen Guinea Special on 11 August 1968, the day before the official BR main line steam ban came into force see image 30382. 44781 was officially withdrawn from Carnforth shed by BR at the end of that month. While 44871 ended up in preservation, no 44781 became a (temporary) film star, appearing in the film 'The Virgin Soldiers'. Unforunately it was 'wrecked' as part of the film and cut up on site afterwards.
