Piershill

I'm standing in Smokey (sic) Brae on 12 February 2011 with the ECML above me and what is now the Powderhall branch bridging to the north. The branch leaves the main line at the accurately (if unimaginatively) named Powderhall Branch Junction to the right. This was called Piershill when the line went all the way to Granton and the Abbeyhill loop returned to the ECML via Lochend Junction. Piershill Station, which closed in 1964, was immediately to the left. A blocked up arch to the right, just before the ECML bridge, is carved 'Back Gate' referring to Piershill Barracks which closed c1930, the stone being used for the tenements which stand there today.
