Stratford Shed

Gresley B17 4-6-0 no 61658 The Essex Regiment standing in front of the unique coaling plant at Stratford shed in the late 1950s. The ramp in the background is carrying coal on a conveyor belt from a large underground storage facility (fed by wagons via rotary tippler) up to the 800 ton capacity reinforced concrete storage bunkers. The bunkers were fitted with 8 discharge chutes on either side allowing up to 7 locomotives (dependent on size) to be coaled at any one time. The coaling plant, brought into use in 1922, required 12 men to operate it - compared with the 32 previously deployed on coaling activities at Britain's largest shed.
