Edinburgh Waverley

Plans for escalators on Waverley Steps were first put forward decades ago, perhaps going back to when practical escalators were first invented. At last it's now going ahead.  The steps were closed on 10 February 2011 for a year with the screened off entrance from Princes Street seen here 2 days later.  On reopening the steps will remain on one side and the whole lot will be covered.  There will also be lifts.  The top of Waverely Steps is notoriously draughty.  Planet Neptune has winds of up to 890mph which astronomers claim to be the strongest in the Solar System: Edinburgensians need some persuading.
