Donibristle Siding

A4 Pacific no 588 Merlin, in wartime black livery, is pulled from the East Coast Main Line at Donibristle Halt on May 3 1946 and is about to cross the A921 road. The locomotive was being taken into 'HMS Merlin', the Royal Naval Air Station at Donibristle on the East Ness Jetty Branch (later 'HMS Cochrane'). An unveiling ceremony was later carried out there by Captain Chatwin, the base commanding officer, revealing the 'HMS Merlin' crest on the locomotive cab side (later relocated to the boiler casing). The level crossing post in the picture still stands see image 32454.
