Saltburn
One of the world's earliest purpose-built railway hotels, complete with private platform, the former S&D Zetland Hotel (now converted to flats) stands above the cliffs on Marine Parade, in April 2008. Saltburn station is behind the building. The hotel, as well as the station see image 19902 and much of the rest of the town is built using the distinctive white firebrick produced at the nearby works of Henry Pease, son of the founder of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Pease was the man whose vision resulted in the extension of the railway from Redcar in 1861 together with the formation of the Saltburn Improvement Co to promote the development of the 'new town' to make it, at the time, one of the most modern resorts on the north east coast.
