Balmenach Distillery

Side by side at Balmenach Distillery in October 1966, one mode of transport soon to be extinguished by the other. Balmenach was the most southerly of two Speyside distilleries with its own 'pug' locomotive, in this case shunting inbound barley and outbound spirit over a short private branch line to exchange sidings at Cromdale station on the Speyside line. The daily freight train over the Speyside line was withdrawn by British Rail on 4th November 1968 - with traffic then concentrated on modern railheads in Dufftown and Elgin - but the Kilmarnock-built 0-4-0 steam locomotive has been preserved on the Strathspey Railway at nearby Boat of Garten.
