Gorbals

View north with, to the right, the site of Gorbals Station, its stone staircase still in place. To the left (the red brick structure) Main Street station, on the line to Paisley Canal. Main Street opened in 1872, and closed in September 1900 when the quadrupled route from Port Eglinton to St Enoch was opened by the G&SWR. It was replaced by Eglinton Street (later Cumberland Street) station, further west see image 14613. Gorbals Station opened in 1877 as a replacement for the former Southside terminus and was the penultimate stop on this line prior to closure in 1928. To the north of the two stations the lines converged at Gorbals Junction.
