Crieff [2nd]

The mid-day departure for Gleneagles prepares to leave Crieff's grand and capacious station in the early summer of 1961 (once someone closes the track-side door). If ever a line which was soon to face the Beeching Axe had options for sensible cost rationalisation to avoid closure, then this was it - too many buildings, extensive platform awnings, three tracks through the station, complex signalling - all for a 'one train working' railbus service and a couple of freight trains daily. The Beeching Report actually highlighted the Gleneagles-Crieff/Comrie service as a case study, and the statistics showed that it was the track and signalling costs which killed the service. If a Crieff-Gleneagles 'basic railway' had clung on, doubtless we would now be enjoying an hourly Crieff-Glasgow service!
