Witham

The line from Witham to Maldon East closed in 1966, but a short stub at the Witham end continued in business discretely up until the 1980s. This stub served the former Rom River Reinforcement factory at Witham, allowing the delivery of occasional wagons of bundled reinforcing rods. The wagons were propelled on to the start of the branch from the main line, then drawn up to the unloading gantry by this diminutive Planet locomotive. This 1978 view is towards Maldon - the original branch line is on the right and ended in buffer stops a hundred yards or so further on.
