Before the SPORTIS ticket machines appeared (1987 in the Edinburgh
area) on-train tickets were laboriously written out by hand and a carbon copy kept. Here are two examples from the mid 1980s. Even the SPORTIS machines were rather limited by today's standards, and a copy of the National Fares Manual had to be carried on every train for anything even slightly unusual.
