Pierre the Polite Engine - that blackboard by the steps is headed 'Etiquettes'. So EITHER Le Gros Controlleur pops out every morning with a fresh piece of chalk, and tells the engine to shunt gently, wash behind its buffeurs, and never to toot at little old grandes dames who aren't expecting it; OR it means 'duties'. I prefer option 1.
