Ballater

The Deeside line stopped at Ballater, right? Not quite. If you follow the promisingly named Old Line Road, you come across a very scenic footpath - here seen high above the River Dee to the right. The Deeside line nearly got to Braemar, but Queen Victoria (God bless her!) heard about it, and was NOT amused. She didn't want her tranquility disturbed at Balmoral - so work stopped in the middle of a field. [Railscot note: the line was built as far as Bridge of Gairn.]
